Dear Pet Parents,
Geez Louise it’s hot outside! Don’t get me wrong, my little family loves to get out and about on these hot summer days and most often we spend time splashing around in the pool or at the beach to beat the hot Southern heat. But family time includes our pup, Ozzy and his pup friends so offering them time to get soaked and cool off is a fun day for our pets too. Just like our kiddos, our pets need time to expend their energy and enjoy time outdoors, so what do you do to help them enjoy the pretty summer days but not get overheated? Here are some tips to cool your pooch while soaking in the last days of summer.
Water, Water and more Water! Your lawn is dry, your pup is panting and the kids want to run in the sprinkler – so turn it on! Offering a chance for your pets to play in the yard with a sprinkler or even just spraying them down with the water hose is a great way to cool them off and enjoy some fun. Our pup Ozzy gets such a kick out of chasing the sprinkler and trying to catch the water out of the water hose with his mouth. This is also a great time for kids to play and engage with your pet in a fun outdoor activity.
Change the Scenery and Take a Walk! We live near a beach and take full advantage of the scenery, offering our sweet pup the chance to get his exercise by walking to our favorite water spot and then enjoying the cool waves before walking home. If you live near the beach or ocean, get out and take your pup on a walk to the water for refreshing playtime. Maybe you live near a nice lake, river or have a favorite creek you can stop by. Often, our friends take their pets on their boat for rides and stop to have a swim. Getting outside is a great time to exercise with your furry friend and enjoy local watering holes and natural water features.
Pups Love The Pool, Too! If you have a water loving dog, you might as well invest in a small outdoor pool for your pup because I can assure you it will be a hit. If you aren’t able to have a small pool for your pup to swim in at home, check into local pools for dog friendly options they may have. Sometimes public or city pools might not allow pets or pups due to certain restrictions, but it’s worth it to check out private and community pools, which may offer pet swim time – perfect to cool down your little buddy and beat the blistering heat. When at the pool or in your own pool at home, grab some water friendly dog toys they can play with, splash-balls they can fetch or throw a Frisbee!
If you are like me, the summer heat can be great to spend time in but will drain the energy from you faster than Fido can retrieve. Just as you can provide your pet with some fun activities to beat the heat, you have to remember to replenish their energy with healthy food and lots of water. Not allowing your pet to drink pool water due to chlorine is important and maintaining a healthy diet for your pet is absolutely key. Since Ozzy loves to spend most of his days outside, I really have to make sure that he eats and drinks properly so I can keep him active, fit and healthy as he grows in these energy filled puppy stages.
My go-to energy boosting dog food for Ozzy has always been Wellness brand dog food. Lately, I’ve been using Wellness® CORE® RawRev™ and it has been amazing to see how much Oz has loved it and how it supports his growing little body. You can read HERE why I started trying out Wellness brand dog food for our little pup and how it has been such a great option since he loves to snack on raw bites. As his pup mom it has also made me feel more comfortable incorporating raw food easily and safely to every one of his meals. This high-‐protein, grain-‐free kibble is combined with 100% raw meat pieces to create a savory, nutrient-‐rich meal packed with everything your dog needs to thrive from the core.
