Dear mama friends,
As a child, I always loved to read. I remember in first grade I set my sights on a bunny in our classroom and told our teacher that if I won our reading contest I wanted it for my prize. Winning that dang bunny didn’t slow my reading down at all as a kiddo but becoming a parent has. One of the joys that I now find in lieu of reading for my personal pleasure is being able to read to and with my girls.
Recently, a dear author friend from the UK mailed the girls a book she had written. She thought it would be perfect for their age and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Opening the package from her, we found delight to have a new choice in our nightly book reading and have fallen in love with a little boy named James and his amazing gifts.
James and the Amazing Gift, a lovely children’s paperback story is written by Nicola J Rowley and beautifully tells a story of a little boy named James who wakes up on a daily basis with a desire in his heart to bring joy to others. He recognizes early on that he can make others feel happy by showing them kindness through a smile and kind gestures. His intention is to encourage and make an impact on each person he meets throughout his day by using his beautiful smile which is his “gift” . When he stumbles upon an elderly lady dining alone, he becomes torn realizing that his “gift” of cheer may or may not work on everyone.
This book is perfectly written for children to learn compassion, kindness and how to show empathy to others in a way that they can understand and act out themselves. The book’s main focus is to bring to light the notion that our elderly friends can feel isolated at times or lonely. By reading this, our children can be challenged to act upon their own “gifts” and uplift others, especially our elderly population during Christmas time. My twins loved the book and have told me many times that they wanted to “help someone like James”. We have since read this on a nightly basis and being the Holiday season, I couldn’t think of anything more fitting.
Nicola is passionate about helping others and is donating a portion of book sales to her local UK Charity, “Contact The Elderly” whose main goal is to tackle loneliness amongst the elderly population.
